VOLUME 1, NO. 2 E D I T O R' S L E T T E R TEMPUS G GETTING A SECOND CHANCE HAS become commonplace these days – and in turn, so has giving others a second chance. Some call it a "do-over;" others, a mulligan. Maybe it's just an opportunity to right a wrong. A second chance, it seems, is all we ask. We all make mistakes. Think about it: Throughout our lives, where would we be if we were denied one more time to try again? You get three strikes in baseball, not one. And everyone likes the "comeback kid," because cheering for redemption is part of the fun. To learn from one's mistakes often produces spectacular results the second time around. An extreme example is Abraham Lincoln–what if he never got a second term as president? Or, what if he had given up after his frst defeat in running for elected offce? Think of Steve Jobs and his stop-and-start career with Apple. Then, think about what happened when he was given a second chance at running the company. Yes, some second chances are downright questionable, but we forgive and forget, and hope for the best. That's our way, here in the U.S. Ben Wright is a big personality. He is beyond affable, with his quintessential British humor and a laugh that seems to bubble up from his toes. He's lived a life that most would envy. As a journalist, he's been an observer of some of sports most enduring moments, and he's been offered many a seat alongside celebrities. We caught up with Wright at his home in North Carolina (see Finding Mister Wright, page 30). He fell from national prominence in 1995 and, for most, was forgotten about. While some may argue that he has had lots of second chances throughout his illustrious career, he never completely rebounded from his fall from prominence, after voicing an honest opinion and offering to help another struggling journalist. Yet, at 81, we learned he is at the top of his game. He remains jovial and quick with a story, captivating an audience as only he can. He holds no grudge and seems blessed to fnd peace and serenity at his lot in life, even though he never really got a second chance at life in the spotlight. If ever a do-over was deserved, Ben Wright is worthy. Anyone willing to give him a mulligan is rewarded with one of the richest tales in modern golf history. Wright's story to tell is ours to savor. Righting a wrong has never been so easy or so enjoyable.
