Into the Woods 452 ROYALTON TURNPIKE BARNARD, VERMONT 05031  800-894-6327 TWINFARMS.COM TWIN FARMS, BARNARD, VERMONT BY Heidi Williams Words fail when describing Twin Farms, once the home place of two lauded authors and now a quaint yet luxurious inn for discerning guests. ¥ In 1928, journalist Dorothy Thompson accepted a marriage proposal from Nobel PrizeÐwinning author Sinclair Lewis on the promise that he would buy her a farm in Vermont with Òdelicious air.Ó That same year, the couple purchased a Vermont farmhouse, circa 1795, for $10,000, and there they played host to fellow literary fgures and prominent politicians, entertaining with "lively discussions and legendary parties" all the while. Through the years, the property has changed hands several times, eventually transforming into Twin Farms offers twenty rooms spread over its main house suites and several cottages. Common areas for gathering include The Pub, a favorite spot for cocktail hour. 1 12 one of the nation's most noted small hotels. A 2005 renovation brought the total number of accommodations to twenty, and the inn now exists as one of the country's most sophisticated escapes, with amenities that include museum-quality art, fne dining, and exceptional decor. When considering the day at Twin Farms, it is full of opportunity—from cycling, croquet, and lake swimming in the warmer months, to skiing, ice skating, and snowshoeing during winter. There are no fewer selections when it comes to dining on property: A full Vermont breakfast is served in the morning, tea is poured in the afternoon, Moët & Chandon Imperial toasts are made at cocktail hour, and festive evening barbecues take place in the cabana. The rustic Barn Room provides a popular interlude between dusk and dinner, with live music and cocktails set against the backdrop of a roaring fre. The dining room accommodates an intimate meal alongside a vast selection from the inn's wine cellar, which holds more than 26,000 bottles of wine. (California, Oregon, and Wash- Tempus-Magazine.com . Summer 2013 ington State wineries are the stars of the cellar.) For relaxation, spa treatments feature Out of the Woods organic herbal-infused products, handcrafted in Somerset, England. Also unique to the inn is a dedicated building that houses a 104-degree Japanese furo, a stone soaking tub. And then there's the question of where to lay one's head while staying at Twin Farms. The Main House suites are steeped in American history and have exceptional summer views of surrounding mountains and gardens. The Lodge, a former artist's studio, is situated next to and above the Main House, in the shadow of a modest mountain. And the Farmhouse at Copper Hill consists of a foursuite sanctuary, sitting atop a knoll and next to Copper Pond. Its two buildings are connected by a rustic library and lounge, featuring timbered ceilings, a feldstone freplace, and a private terrace, overlooking the water. Not to be forgotten are the inn's ten cottages, each uniquely designed and decorated and each with a screened porch, at least one freplace, and private outdoor space. The laudable setting at Twin Farms is enough to inspire a person to write his own story here. Immersed in luxury and surrounded by nature, there's no better place to pen the frst page.
