Guest rooms feature plush beds, Carrara marble bathrooms, and the type of water-blasting saucer showerheads one tends to fnd at the most exclusive of golf clubs. The ocean views aren't half bad, either. If the Ugadale is booked up, the Royal Hotel is no step down in quality—it's just a short shuttle ride from the golf courses—and some travelers may prefer the chance to explore Campbeltown, anyway. For foursomes looking for a little extra privacy, the eight seaside Ugadale Cottages are two-bedroom, twobath suites united by a kitchen and a comfortably appointed common room. (Room rates vary; machrihanishdunes.com) Travelers to Machrihanish are spoiled when it comes to culinary choice. Three spots in particular offer tradition. The bustling Black Sheep Pub, located on the ground level of the Royal Hotel, is the place for a "big night out" on Campbeltown's harbor. Adjacent to the Ugadale is the Old Clubhouse, a cozy and casual tin ceilinged charmer. Here, one can fnd an original take on a much-feared Scottish delicacy. Get this: Haggis Nachos. Surprisingly, they're delicious. The Old Clubhouse is also a local nexus for live music. Finally, just off the Ugadale's main lobby is the Kintyre Club, a private dining room for hotel guests. Warm light, maroon upholstery, and mahogany furnishings defne this inviting space, where fne fare like venison medallions and diver scallops is served with sophistication. The Mull of Kintyre is served by Campbeltown Airport (hial.co.uk/ campbeltown-airport), which is less than a ten-minute drive from Machrihanish Golf Club. It's an interesting place. Despite being a former Royal Air Force base with one of the longest runways in the UK nearly 10,000 feet, long enough to handle anything short of the space shuttle—it receives so little traffc that today it pretty much serves small aircraft. It's also closed on the weekends, so plan accordingly. On the commercial side, Flybe (fybe.com) operates weekday service into Campbeltown from Glasgow International.
