SAN MICHELE BUILT BY SWEDISH PHYSICIAN AND AUTHOR , AXEL MUNTHE 1. Villa San Michele was built by the Swedish physician and author, Axel Munthe, toward the end of the 19th century. 2. 3. The gardens of the villa are home to a variety of Mediterranean plants and a medieval chapel. 4. San Michele houses an impressive collection of classical Roman, Etruscan, and Egyptian artifacts, including a marble bust of Emperor Tiberius. O San Michele boasts an incredibly panoramic position on the north-eastern slopes of Anacapri. One visitor, a poetic Swedish doctor, Axel Munthe, became so enamored of the island that he built the magnifcent Villa San Michele on the crest of a hill with stunning views of the Mediterranean.
