Back slid my way into that place where souls get lost Lines get crossed And the pain won't go away I hit my knees, now here I stand There I was, now here I am Here I am Changed While he waits, Rooney, like any proud father, is happy to scroll through his phone to show off a few photos of his two children: Jagger, four, and twoyear-old Raquel, as well as a few pics of one of their dogs, Pippa, an English bulldog. Rooney seems to fulfll that maxim of someone ordinary doing extraordinary things. Not that it gets him off easy with the wife when he comes back from tour, he admits. "As soon as I get back home she's all, 'Okay, here's your honey-do list. Here you go, and by the way here's a dirty diaper for you to go change.'" His smile—as he pulls up a photo of Jagger and Raquel in matching tuxedo-shirt pajamas—says he wouldn't have it any other way. He is also quick to express gratitude for his parents, who are still married after ffty-three years. "I don't know how they did it," he says, "had four kids, they both had to work jobs, a little twelve-hundredsquare-foot ranch-style home we all four grew up in." He seems to have an appreciation for the way it once was—before the awards, the spotlight, the global fandom—when he was just a kid in his bedroom with a guitar and rock posters and his dreams. It seems like they all do—even stopping by their old stomping grounds when they can. "We see Jay more than we see anybody," says Bradsher. "He was [at the Fiddle and Steel] about four months ago. He just happened to be in with a friend of his, and one of our guys, Frank Taylor, that Jay knew from way back when, was singing. Frank played some songs and Jay went up and played some songs and sang some with him. They had a great time. Stayed all night. Just like a normal patron." It's very Nashville—you never know whom you might fnd yourself two-stepping next to. Or, how far you might go just to end up back where it all started. The same, yet changed.
