VOLUME 1, NO. 3 E D I T O R' S L E T T E R I I CAN'T REMEMBER THE EXACT YEAR, but it was the late 1990s. Professional golf was in its boom time.Tiger Woods had just emerged as the game's dominant player, and everyone, it seemed, wanted to be in the golf business. As then editor of a golf publication, I was attending the Professional Golfers' Association of America's (PGA's) annual trade show in Orlando, Florida's massive convention center. This was also the time that the size of your trade show booth was as competitive as the price of a dozen golf balls. I remember stopping at a small tabletop booth in a sea of behemoth exhibits because the name of the brand, Life Is Good, caught my attention (see "The Good Life," page 82). The company was still in its infancy. My guess is that the cost of attending the PGA show was probably more than its profts that year. The owners were there touting their Life Is Good collection of golf-related designs hoping to get their wares into golf shops across the country. What seemed improbable then has become almost a household name, as "Jake," Life Is Good's iconic symbol, appears not only in golf shops, but also at a wide array of national retailers. However, what is more unbelievable is not how far they've come since the tabletop display in Orlando, but how much joy "Jake" brings to the less fortunate. Brothers Bert and John Jacobs cofounded Life Is Good to create a lifestyle brand that would spread the power of optimism. In all of their success, they've also found a way to spread the wealth. To date, the company has raised over $9.5 million for children in need through its annual Life Is Good Festival, products, and other fund-raising efforts. And, even more astounding is that it continues to give by donating an unprecedented 10 percent of net profts to charity each year. My brother and I worked together once when we were not quite teenagers and built a makeshift putt-putt golf course in our backyard—much to our parents' dismay. We charged the neighborhood kids twenty-fve cents to play, and I'm pretty sure we never thought of donating the money, or any percentage thereof, to anything other than our own fund for candy, baseball cards, and gum. I wear my Life Is Good T-shirt proudly. It makes me smile each time I put it on, especially knowing that in a very small way, I'm helping those less fortunate realize that life really is good.
