ORACLE TEAM USA TESTING THEIR FIRST TWO BOATS DURING PRACTICE RUNS IN JULY By February 2013 the repairs were complete and the original AC72 was back on the water with the second boat scheduled for completed in mid-spring. But a frightening question remained: Was the Oracle Team USA crash just a result of sailing too aggressively in nasty conditions or was this an integral issue with the size and speed of the newly designed boats? Another team would soon fnd themselves in a similar situation, with catastrophic results. By winning the previous America's Cup held in 2010, Larry Ellison and his Oracle Team USA earned the right to modify the rules of this year's competition. This is one of the quirks of the America's Cup and equivalent to golfs current Masters champion selecting next year's balls, clubs, course, and greens speed. The 2010 Cup was known as the Battle of the Billionaires, with Ellison's Oracle Team defeating the winner of the 2007 Cup, Alinghi, led by Swiss billionaire Ernesto Bertarelli. The competition followed a long and acrimonious court battle over who had the right to challenge Alinghi for the next Cup. A newly formed Spanish yacht club with THE NEW AMERICA'S CUP AC72 BOATS ARE SEVENTY-TWO-FOOT-LONG CARBON-FIBER CATAMARANS WITH THE TRADITIONAL SAILS REPLACED BY SOLID, FIXED WINGS TOWERING OVER 130 FEET ABOVE THE WATER.
