Around the end of the eighteenth century, the Christofe family was manufacturing jewelry, gold buttons, silver-threaded cloth, and epaulettes for French army offcers uniforms. The modern company was founded in 1830 by visionary twenty-fveyear-old Charles Christofe, an innovative sort who grew the company with an eye toward expansion, receiving commissions such as a queen's royal crown and ceremonial swords in far-fung regions of the globe.
