PrEMiErE issUE Editor's Letter story time T thErE is art in thE tELLing of a story. When you frame creative ideas and information in a compelling way, you not only hold the attention of your audience, you create art. So begins the story of Tempus. Tempus is Latin for "time." While the story of our company, Tempus Jets, is aviation, our magazine is simply Tempus because the time has come for us to tell our stories. In this, our frst issue, we present articles that refect the sophisticated values of our readers: lovers of the sky, the stars, and the moon. These pages offer an imaginative mix of irresistible tales that entertain and enlighten in a creative, compelling package. Storytelling is a timeless tradition. Even in our society of instant gratifcation, it's not hard to fnd folks poring over books, devouring good writing—everything from Harry Potter to Fifty Shades of Grey to Killing Lincoln. Stories allow us to paint a mental picture, and with the turn of every page, they feel less like words. They become real. One of the premier storytellers of our time, Winston Groom, contributes to this, our premiere issue. His acclaimed and best-selling book Forrest Gump captured our collective imagination. (His novel was later followed by the movie of the same name.) Mr. Groom continues to weave extraordinary tales, fnding largely untold stories and breathing life into them again. In this issue, Mr. Groom shares the tale of Black Gold, a little-known but legendary racehorse from the 1920s (see page 68). Simultaneously sad, true, and glorious, the story he's penned leaves us wanting more. That's the gift of great storytellers: their knack for making us ponder the "what ifs" and "how comes," long after the book is closed. We hope you'll feel the same way about each issue of Tempus. There are so many stories to tell, and we strive to share those that both inspire and inform; pieces that compel you to act and make you stop and think. We have stories to weave. You have places to go. We hope you'll enjoy bringing Tempus along for the ride.
