2. (it encompasses more than two thousand private homes), and it ranks high among resort guests as well. "Of course they want to play the River Course because of its history and because they've seen it on television, but the Woods Course is a very good golf course." The design is a little more demanding than Kingsmill's other two courses, requiring a strong game off the tee and ability to navigate a few tight fairways. The course has been listed as a "Top Ten" in virginia by Golfweek magazine. But it's the River Course that is Kingsmill's jewel. Designed by Pete Dye and opened in 1974, the course was home to the Michelob Championship at Kingsmill from 1981 to 2002 producing such champions as Fuzzy Zoeller, David Duval, and Charles Howell III, who won the fnal edition of the tournament fnishing two shots ahead of Brandt Jobe and Scott Hoch. When the boys stopped playing here, the girls stepped in, and the course became one of the top draws on the LPGA tour. The Michelob Ultra Open was played each spring until 2009 when Anheuser-Busch was purchased by InBev, which had decided to focus solely on beverages, selling off Anheuser-Busch's entertainment properties including Busch Gardens, Sea World, and Kingsmill. "When Xanterra bought us, they decided to bring back the LPGA event and serve as title sponsor for the frst two events, with an option on the third," says Nooe. The frst "Kingsmill Championship" was held in September of 2012 with Jiyai Shin and Paula Creamer fnishing tied at sixteen under through seventy-two holes. Creamer appeared a shoe-in for the win, setting a tournament-scoring record through ffty-four holes, but a three-putt on the last hole of regulation play put her in a tie with Shin. The subsequent play-off lasted until dark on Sunday when after eight extra holes the two remained tied. Play resumed Monday morning on the par three sixteenth where a thousand spectators lined the fairway from tee to green. A Creamer three-putt bogey ended her chances as Shin two putted for par. "The drama of Sunday and Monday were just unbelievable," says Nooe. "It was an incredible playoff." With 62,000 attendees, the 2012 event brought the third-largest crowd in Kingsmill's LPGA history. "To have not had the event for three years and then have that large a turnout I think it really showed that the community was excited to have it back." So were the players. The River Course was the site of Suzann Pettersen's frst win on tour and Annika 1. Paula 2. Now-retired Creamer competed in a playoff during the 2012 Kingsmill Championship.
