He's told this story hundreds, maybe even thousands, of times, but no matter how many times he tells it, he always talks about the eyes. It happened in the fall of 2002. Mor- ris and a friend had traveled from the United States to Southeast Asia at the invitation of a group working to raise awareness of child trafcking and exploitation. Morris's friend was in a band that at the time was gaining some fame and he wanted to use that fame, The best way to end child trafcking and exploitation is to prevent it from ever happening. To reach children before trafckers do, Love146 began work in vulnerable communities, equipping children and care providers with the tools needed to recognize and prevent trafcking. It Wa s Her Eyes. and the platform that comes with it, for a good cause. Child trafcking seemed like a very good cause, but neither Morris nor his friend knew much about it. Morris was not a naive man. He had been doing humanitarian work for years, including a stint with Mer- cy Ships, which operates a feet of hospital boats that bring medical care to the develop- ing world. Morris had seen atrocities; he had witnessed the harshness and cruelty of the world. He was not a stranger to pain and suf- fering. During the trip, Morris and his friend met up with a group of criminal investiga- tors working undercover to gather evidence against brothel owners exploiting children. Once enough evidence was collected, the investigators would then conduct another investigation, this time of the local law en- forcement agency to fnd out which agents could be trusted and which ones were being paid off by the brothel managers and traf- fckers. Finally, when both investigations were complete, which could take months, the brothel would be raided and the children would begin the unbelievably long, some- times lifelong, journey toward recovery. To collect evidence in the brothels, the in- vestigators wear hidden surveillance equip- ment and pose as customers. Morris and his friend stood outside a brothel with the un- dercover investigators who were ready to go in. If Morris and his friend wanted to go in- side, they too would have to pose as custom- ers. Meaning they would have to pretend to be sexual predators. Te investigators of- fered them tips. Morris was repulsed. Right before walking inside, one investigator gave Morris a warning: "If you're not going to be able to hold it together, then don't go in, be- cause we cannot risk you destroying an in- vestigation that has been ongoing for some time now." Morris gave that some serious thought. Ten he walked inside. He found himself in a small room, and his eyes were immediately drawn to a pane of glass on one wall. Morris was standing alongside his friend, the investigators, and a few other men who were not undercover. Tese men were actual customers, there to L O V E 1 4 6
