V I G N E T T E S Hop Scotch Tours, tastings, barrel rides—everything you need to get schooled in Scotland's drink of choice by Steven Tingle 3 7 IT TAKES A LOT OF WILLPOWER TO stand in a room flled with some 3,300 bottles of unopened Scotch. But such a room exists and it is just one part of what is a completely immersive Scotch experience on the Royal Mile in Edinburgh, Scotland, aptly named the Scotch Whisky Experience. Begun in 1988 in an old schoolhouse adjacent to the esplanade of Edinburgh Castle, the Scotch Whisky Experience was created by Scottish distillers to educate visitors to the country's capital on everything Scotch: varieties, distilling methods, aging, tasting, regions, and history. "Our job is to provide everyone from the novice to the whisky enthusiast with a variety of different tours and products and training," says Julie Trevisan Hunter, the Experience's head of marketing. "We engage people with the whole category of Scotch whisky and all the different brands." Te Experience offers multiple tours that each start with a Disneyesque barrel ride through a replica distillery for an overview of the whisky-making process. Te tours then move on to discussions on the history, regions, and aromas followed by a tasting. In lieu of whisky, visitors under eighteen sample Irn-Bru, a bright orange sugary soda that's often referred to as "Scotland's other national drink." The vault containing the world's largest collection of Scotch whisky in 3,384 bottles of all types of Scotch, from blended whiskies to single malts.
