IT'S A SCENE THAT LOOKS AS IF it should be captured in a snow globe. A staged setting of what you would imagine a winter palace in Switzerland to look like. Complete with trees that look as if Dr. Seuss drew them into the scene among a valley of Alpine chalets with a main street of luxury stores. Te palace in this storybook setting is the 100-year-old Gstaad Palace hotel. Te hotel sits in a valley surrounded by the Swiss Alps. At 3,500 feet, it's a manageable altitude, and the surrounding ski slopes give the area a bigger, grander feel. Gstaad is located in the southwest corner of Switzerland and is just under two hours by car from Geneva. Andrews and her husband, flm director Blake Edwards, purchased a chalet in the early '70s. She also spread the word among fellow Hollywood stars, and suddenly the Gstaad Palace was the place for the rich and famous. Frank Sinatra, Louis Armstrong, and others performed in the Gstaad Palace nightclub. Gstaad became the hip place to be, and the hotel was center stage. Edwards flmed some of Te Return of the Pink Panther, starring Peter Sellers as the bumbling detective, in Gstaad in 1975 and made the Gstaad Palace, along with several staff 1. The village promenade of Gstaad features numerous luxury shops. 2. The Lobby Bar is ornate but relaxed and comfortable with a wonderful view of the Alps.
